How to Download Movies and Shows to Watch Them on a Flight (or Anywhere Else Offline)

Every place needs a strong Internet connection. You can download movies and shows to watch them on a flight, on the subway, or in the middle of nowhere without the help of a cell phone tower.

It’s only possible to download some of it, but for many services, you can get movies ahead of time and bring them with you. This could also save you a lot of useful cell data, especially if you’re roaming abroad. There are a few things you can do.

Netflix

Downloading Movies on Netflix App

You can’t download every movie or TV show on Netflix to watch when you’re not online. To see what’s offered, you’ll have to go to a certain section. Go to My Netflix > Downloads > See What You Can Download on your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet.

You can see everything that you can download on this page. Select a movie or TV show you want to download, then tap the download icon next to it. Keep in mind that you’ll have to do this for each episode of a TV show. View all of your downloaded movies and TV shows by going to My Netflix > Downloads.

You can get the Amazon Prime Video app for iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and Fire Tablets. This app lets you download videos to watch while offline.

You only need to get the app and log in with your Amazon account. Tap the “Download” button to the right of the movie or TV show you want to watch. Videos you’ve downloaded will show up in the app’s “Downloads” area later. You can then open the app and watch the videos, even if you’re not online.

Hulu

Is it possible to download shows on Hulu? Yes, and movies too. You must have a Hulu plan without ads, though. If you want to see what you can download to watch later, open Hulu on your iPad, iPhone, or Android device and go to Downloads > See What’s Downloadable.

Tap the “Download” button on the “Details” page when you find something you want to watch later. You’ll need to do this for every episode of a TV show. Hulu will ask you if you want to use your data connection to download the material if you aren’t on Wi-Fi.

Disney+

You can download Disney+ shows to watch them when you’re not online, but like Hulu, you need a plan that doesn’t include ads. On your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, open the app and find something you want to download. On the Details page, just tap the “Download” button.

If you’ve downloaded something, you can find it in the “Downloads” tab and watch it when you’re not online.

(HBO) Max

You can download materials to watch when you aren’t online with Max (formerly HBO Max). You can use the app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android to find something you would like to watch. Then, on the page with information about the movie or show, tap the download button. You can download one episode at a time for shows.

To watch the downloaded videos, just go to the app’s home page and tap on the Downloads tab.

Rip Your DVDs or Blu-rays

Last but not least, you can “rip” movies and TV shows from DVDs or Blu-rays to digital video files that you can carry around with you more easily. These files can be saved on a laptop, phone, or tablet, so you can watch them without the disc.

Many apps can rip DVDs and Blu-rays, but Handbrake is our favorite. It’s free and has settings for ripping files that work with iPhone, iPad, Android, and more.
